Figure Skating - figure skating

Expert: Dr. Bruce Forciea - 11/20/2008

Question
Does figure skating build up your muscles?

Answer
Hi Lexie:

Good question and the answer would depend on a few things. For one if you mean building bulky muscles such as weight lifting then figure skating will not (just look at the olympic skaters). As far as gaining muscle strength then figure skating definitely does build muscular strength especially in the legs and gluteals. Also, it depends how often you skate. Your strength will plateau after awhile and you will need to skate more or do some off-ice training in order to increase your strength.

Hope this helps...
Take care,

Bruce
