Expert: Dr. Bruce Forciea Date: 2/28/2008 Subject: hockey skates verses figure skates
Question Is it better for a tot who plans on playing hockey when he learns to skate to start out immediately in hockey skates? I find that tots have better balance in a figure skate while learning. Others say that it is harder for them to make the transfer later to hockey skates.
Answer Hi Janice:
I have seen many tots learn to skate with either hockey or figure skates. Generally if he wants to learn hockey then stick with the hockey skates. One thing to watch out for is that the skates are sharpened properly and well maintained. Good equipment makes a big difference in learning to skate.
It is also important to get into a class that focuses more on hockey than figure skating because there are some differences in technique.
Good luck with your son's skating.
Take care,
Bruce
