Subject: Conditioning
Question Hi I am 13 and a competitive skater with a Pre-novice test. I have all of my doubles except the axel and I need to do some off-ice training. I was wondering if there are any websites or if you have any good exercises that need minimal equipment (exercise ball, skip rope, stairs, etc).
Answer Hi Nicole:
Sounds like you are on the right track with your skating. There are a lot of exercises you could do with bands and balls but it would be beyond the scope of this forum for me to describe them.
You could check out my site and look at the skaters section for some exercises. Also, I would recommend meeting with a personal trainer at least a couple of times to go over a core conditioning program for you. This is really the best way to go since the trainer can watch you do the exercises and put together a program that really fits your needs. Make sure your trainer is certified. I used to hold the CSCS certification (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) and now they have a subspecialty in skating. I think this certification is one of the best since it requires a degree and passing a rigorous test.
Generally, the exercises you would be interested in would be for core conditioning, plyometrics and (of course) stretching.
