Question
QUESTION: I have been off the ice for almost two years now and I haven't had much physical activity. I started skating when I was 7 and I am now 16. I've got the money to start back up, and that's what I plan on doing this summer. What are some good off-ice exercises that I can do at home to get back into shape and ready to start preforming my jumps again? Are their any exercises that I can do to improve my spins? What stretches are best?

ANSWER: Hi Amanda:

There are many exercises you can do to get into shape and they would be too difficult to describe here. However, I can give you some categories of exercises that should help you. For one you should include some core conditioning exercises. Skating relies on the core muscles of the trunk so this would be a good place to start. Also, plyometrics are great for improving jump height although you have to be careful of these because they put a lot of stress on the joints. Start slowly and progress at small intervals. Lastly, stretching is always good as a warm up before exercising. There are a number of stretches for the leg and back muscles you can do. You may want to do some searches on "core conditioning" "plyometrics" and "leg stretches" or look for a book on these.

Good luck with getting back in shape...

QUESTION: Are there any websites you know of that show good exercises?

Answer
For plyometrics try:

http://www.getrolling.com/orbit/plyometrics.html

It's for roller skating but the exercises are the same for ice skating.

If you do the searches I recommended you should get a lot more sites for stretching and core conditioning....
