About Dianne DeLeeuw
Expertise
I can answer questions about figure skating, choreography, ISI or USFSA. Also questions about competing (my Olympic experience or your own competition). I`m a National referre for ISI. Recently I also have been appointed a National Technical Specialist for US Figure Skating. But remember I am not your substitute for a coach! They can see what you are doing! To correct or instruct you on manuevers is really not what I want to do.

Question
QUESTION: my daughter is 11 and in freestyle 1(ISI) and has been there for almost a year.  she has the techniques for the jumps on floor but will not jump once she is on the ice.  any suggestions?

ANSWER: Hi,
Is she afraid?  You need to work with her coach to overcome this.  There is a huge difference doing them on ice.  Make sure she has some pds on. Be patient and build up to them if she really loves it.  At a last resort you could use a harness.
Good luck,
Dianne

QUESTION: she says she is not afraid but she feels herself stopping, slowing down right before she goes into a jump.  she is also very slow going into her jumps and spins.  i was thinking a power class will help her speed.  she is on a synchro team also but they don't do as much power in their practice as they should be.  maybe we will have her coach try the harness on her even though they are low, level jumps.
thanks
vicki

Answer
Hi,
Some skaters feel better at first doing things slower.  Have her work on things she is confident on going faster, like waltz jumps etc.  Stroking classes are good for that age if there is some fun and competition involved.
Go for the harness and more pads, if she learns to not mind the falls it will help.
Good luck...talk to your coach for help!
Dianne
