About Dianne DeLeeuw
Expertise
I can answer questions about figure skating, choreography, ISI or USFSA. Also questions about competing (my Olympic experience or your own competition). I`m a National referre for ISI. Recently I also have been appointed a National Technical Specialist for US Figure Skating. But remember I am not your substitute for a coach! They can see what you are doing! To correct or instruct you on manuevers is really not what I want to do.

Experience
Experience: World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist, coaching all levels of skaters at in California. I coach all levels and ages of skating from tiny tots to adults, first timers to International competitors. I also do choreography, music editing, teach specialty classes and give seminars.

Organizations: USFSA, ISI, PSA, Los Angeles Figure Skating Club

Publications: Recreational Ice Skater, The Edge

Awards: 1976 Olympic Silver Medalist, 1975 World Champion, 1976 European Champion, 6 time National Champion, US and Canadian Double Gold Medalist, 1999 ISI Great Skate Award, 2002 Woman of the Year

Figure Skating - Change in our sport

Question
Hi Dianne.
I just wanted to get your opinion on the state of our sport today.  I am a coach as well and really do not like the way our sport is headed.  I recently read an article interview with Brian Boitano and he really hates the way the sport is today---especially the scoring system--he would like it to go back to the 6.0 and I agree.  Plus he also added and i agree that the programs are all looking a like.  The long program now looks like the short program.  I also hate the change of edge in the spins---it really makes the skater look like a bobble head, plus it really is not a pure way of teaching spins.
Anyway, what is your take on the changes.
Thanks

Answer
Hi,
I really have to defer this question as I am involved in all aspects.  As a National Technical Specialist I have to respect every rule whether I agree with it or not I feel it is right.  IJS is fair and everyone I have worked with is dedicated to having the right skater win.  It is up to the skater and coach to find a way to keep the skating in it.
As a coach I work with my skaters to learn everything because rules change every day, but great skating will always be there.  Yes, many of us take the cookie cutter approach to earning points but it still comes down to a skater putting it all together!
Dianne
