Question My 9.5 y.o. injured her knee doing a double jump at off-ice on the grass. It
has been 3
weeks since the initial injury and she has greatly improved. 1/10 on pain
scale when
bending her knee. The pain is in the front of the patella, and is similar to
"pressing on a
bruise" when she bends it. She had been almost pain free but today seems to
have
aggravated it when landing an axel. We ice it and give motrin as needed. Any
thoughts on
what the problem may be and how to proceed. I do have an appt. to see an
orthopedists
next week.
Thank you
Answer HI Claire:
It would be difficult to tell just what happened to your daughter's knee without examining it but her improvement is a very good sign that the injury was not severe. Lack of swelling would be another. It is not unusual for injuries to be aggravated with return to full activity. As long as there is no severe pain or swelling it should continue to heal.
It is always a good idea to have a doctor take a look at it. You will probably get a script for PT which is also a good idea. If you do go to PT make sure you explain about skating and landing jumps.
