AboutDianne DeLeeuw Expertise I can answer questions about figure skating, choreography, ISI or USFSA. Also questions about competing (my Olympic experience or your own competition). I`m a National referre for ISI. Recently I also have been appointed a National Technical Specialist for US Figure Skating. But remember I am not your substitute for a coach! They can see what you are doing! To correct or instruct you on manuevers is really not what I want to do.

Question Dianne,
Just wondering....(not arguing) ;-)
When did ice skating instructors/judges etc. start to discourage the wrapping of jumps? (It is still considered decent technique on artistic roller). Why is there such a dislike of it on ice?Granted, it makes the skater less aerodynamic and the jump harder to rotate, but there are skaters who can land triple jumps this way (ie. Nakano, Erin Pearl, Silvia Fontana etc.) and there is a prejudice against them for it. Commentators mention it negaively, they are marked down for it etc.....WHY? The only real answer I can get is that it looks "ugly." But who exactly decided this and when??? Is there an official penalty for wrap under the ISJ or just an implied one? Not arguing....just wondering.....
Yes, I am an old roller skater. I jump with a wrap. And I like my wrap. :-) I will never compete so this doesn't affect me personally, but I was just wondering.....
Sincerely,
Rhonda
Answer Hi,
The wrap is considered bad technique right now. But times change, years ago no one crossed their feet in the air. Personally I do not like the wild free leg look, clean tight air is more pleasing to me. In the IJS system points are awarded to you no matter how you accomplish the element if it is complete...however the judges score the grade of execution and will deduct for poor position. Think of it like a free leg with the toe hanging down, or a bent leg on a spiral.
Sorry but that is how it is today!
