About Jamey Key
Expertise
NEW and INTERMEDIATE USERS. WHAT CAN FILEMAKER PRO DO FOR ME? I have been using FileMaker products for over 10 years and have basic knowledge in all areas of FileMaker database set up and use. I`m not prepared to answer questions about complex situations or calculations but can help beginners and intermediate users set up and use FileMaker databases.

Experience
Have been using FileMaker since 1989 in our business. We have 10 users on the network who use these databases every day. Our largest databases have had over 30,000 records at one time. In 1995 one of my files was chosen as "Most Unique Database" in a contest sponsored by Claris, maker of FileMaker. Recently I have developed a set of files for new computer system installed at our church.

Question
Hi jamey,
I have been working with filemaker for a couple of month now and am trying
to set up quite a complex database, or at least for my taste. The database is
supposed to hold the data of an art archive, which means that there are
different informations to be combined for Projects, Artists, Items(Images) and
sometimes Groups of Artists. So i set up these different Tables, but the
relationships really give me a headache as these projects are not consistent.
So some projects are done by one artist, sometimes more than one and
sometimes by a group which again consists of more than one artist. The
problem for me is that these all seem to have many-to-many relationships
and i cant figure out what would be the best way to implement these in
filemaker. do i need one more table each to connect these tables? or how can
i add more that one artist to a project but at the same time assign more than
one project to each artist?
hope this makes sense as i am kind of new to the whole database thing and
find it quite difficult to understand.
thanks a lot for your time anyway.
best,
bettina

Answer
Hello Bettina;

Relationships can be a tricky concept to grasp.  The easiest way for me to show you is if you could possibly email the database to me and I will fix it so things will show up like you want them to.  If you could just make a small sample database, and include a few records of each type of item, i will link them together and you can then see what i did and apply it to your real database.  Send to jameykey@jkat.com and we will get it going

Jamey
