About Jamey Key
Expertise
NEW and INTERMEDIATE USERS. WHAT CAN FILEMAKER PRO DO FOR ME? I have been using FileMaker products for over 10 years and have basic knowledge in all areas of FileMaker database set up and use. I`m not prepared to answer questions about complex situations or calculations but can help beginners and intermediate users set up and use FileMaker databases.

Experience
Have been using FileMaker since 1989 in our business. We have 10 users on the network who use these databases every day. Our largest databases have had over 30,000 records at one time. In 1995 one of my files was chosen as "Most Unique Database" in a contest sponsored by Claris, maker of FileMaker. Recently I have developed a set of files for new computer system installed at our church.

Subject: Filemaker 9 Relationships for Church

Question
I am in the process of setting up our Church's records to their first database --and I believe Filemaker is the best for that!

Would you please tell me what the best way would be to accomplish the following?:

1) I want to create a relationship between a "Primary" contact table with a "All" family members table.  I have assigned an id # to each. And I know that all members in the "primary" would be also in the "all".  I basically want to be able to bring up the information of John Doe, and that it would show me his wife, Jane Doe, and children's info also.

2) How do I format the fields so there are no "duplicate members"?

Thank you in advance for your reply!

Teresa

Answer
Teresa;

Im sorry for taking so long to get back to you.

Heres what I did at my church.  Every family gets a family ID  (such as "20")
Each person in the family gets an individual ID  (such as "1" or "2" or "3" - usually the father has 1 and the wife, 2 and so on.)

Then everyone has a person ID which would be the family ID + a dot + the individual ID.  So the person ID would look like this 20.1 or 20.2  That has worked real well for us

Now, what do you mean format the fields so you have no duplicate members?  In what way?
