About Jamey Key
Expertise
NEW and INTERMEDIATE USERS. WHAT CAN FILEMAKER PRO DO FOR ME? I have been using FileMaker products for over 10 years and have basic knowledge in all areas of FileMaker database set up and use. I`m not prepared to answer questions about complex situations or calculations but can help beginners and intermediate users set up and use FileMaker databases.

Experience
Have been using FileMaker since 1989 in our business. We have 10 users on the network who use these databases every day. Our largest databases have had over 30,000 records at one time. In 1995 one of my files was chosen as "Most Unique Database" in a contest sponsored by Claris, maker of FileMaker. Recently I have developed a set of files for new computer system installed at our church.

Question
QUESTION: Dear James

Was wondering if you might be able to teach me how to add cutting lines somehow to uncut label paper when printing out labels of various sizes that need manual cutting to use as desired. Trying to find the exact centre between each label is sometimes a real pain to find. Any help much appreciated.

ANSWER: Gary;

Making labels can be a pain.  And if you put lines on a plain sheet of paper and cut several pages at one time, you can be assured that some of the cuts will not be exactly on the lines.

Your going to have to experiment and get the data centered as well as possible and use a paper cutter to line up where you want the cuts to be made.  You will get better results trusting the paper cutter to cut in the right place than trying to follow printed lines.

But if you insist on printing lines on the paper, just draw some lines in the layout and color them a very light grey.  In fact you can color them so light you almost cant see them.

Experiment and see what works best for you

QUESTION: Thank you for such a prompt answer. Understand what you are suggesting and yes this is how I'm doing it at the moment. But was wondering how one of my old staff who is no longer with us, managed to add positioning marks around the edges and margins of label sheets that allow the exact positioning to be ascertained..... The corners had an "L" shape matching the corner shape, the pitch of the cuts was with a small "-" and the centre point in the margin had a circle with a line through it. Much like the printing marks on proof copies.

Answer
Those can certainly be made very easily.

while in layout mode, just use the circle and line tools and make the marks however you want them.  It will take a lot of trial and error to get them just right and each time you print, they may still be off a millimeter or so.  But those marks can very easily be made in layout mode.
