About Jamey Key
Expertise
NEW and INTERMEDIATE USERS. WHAT CAN FILEMAKER PRO DO FOR ME? I have been using FileMaker products for over 10 years and have basic knowledge in all areas of FileMaker database set up and use. I`m not prepared to answer questions about complex situations or calculations but can help beginners and intermediate users set up and use FileMaker databases.

Experience
Have been using FileMaker since 1989 in our business. We have 10 users on the network who use these databases every day. Our largest databases have had over 30,000 records at one time. In 1995 one of my files was chosen as "Most Unique Database" in a contest sponsored by Claris, maker of FileMaker. Recently I have developed a set of files for new computer system installed at our church.

Question
QUESTION: Hi there,

I have been trying to figure this out for many months, I need help!

So here is the story. My job had a new database created last year. It was nearly finished, we spent a week with the designer going over the kinks and quirks of it. We were working on it on several computers, not sure which one would be the final workstation for database entry. The actual database is saved on our network. In August we got a new staff member who was going to be in charge of getting the database cleaned up, but since her arrival (not due to anything she did) we haven't been able to modify fields that should be modifiable. I have checked the permissions on the Admin account that I log in under, and it says that it is all access. Is it not working because we opened it on so many different computers from a shared network?

Amidst heavy programming that started up in the Fall we've never had the time to figure this huge problem out. We need our database!

Thank you so much for your help!

ANSWER: Hello Liza;

The first thing you need to do is find out exactly where the database resides.  It is not on the "network".  It is on a computer somewhere.  Probably in your office, but it could be outside your office.

Then go to that computer and get the file info.  You have to make sure the ownership of the file is as follows:

Owner:  fmserver
Access: Read & Write

Group: fmsadmin
Access;  Read & Write

Others:  Read only

This has nothing to do with the FileMaker access privileges.  Do you understand the difference?  Now, let me know if it works.  Email me directly at jameykey@jkat.com

QUESTION: oooh this sounds like something that I haven't tried yet. I have one question. The file lives on the computer that acts as our server (though it doesn't have server software, it's just a G4 tower). The permissions on that are under the name of our server. fmserver and fmsadmin are not options. How do I make them options? I hope that this make sense.

Thank you so much for your help!

Answer
Ok that is because you are not using the Server version.  I didnt take that into account.

You need to make sure all of the people who have access have "Access via FileMaker Network" under the extended privileges.  Try this and then email me.
