About Jamey Key
Expertise
NEW and INTERMEDIATE USERS. WHAT CAN FILEMAKER PRO DO FOR ME? I have been using FileMaker products for over 10 years and have basic knowledge in all areas of FileMaker database set up and use. I`m not prepared to answer questions about complex situations or calculations but can help beginners and intermediate users set up and use FileMaker databases.

Experience
Have been using FileMaker since 1989 in our business. We have 10 users on the network who use these databases every day. Our largest databases have had over 30,000 records at one time. In 1995 one of my files was chosen as "Most Unique Database" in a contest sponsored by Claris, maker of FileMaker. Recently I have developed a set of files for new computer system installed at our church.

Question
Dear Jamey,

I've started doing my work experience in a company which uses Filemaker pro7.
This is the first time that I'm using this DBMS and what I found new in it, was that it was allowing me to implement many-to-many relationships which due to my uni studies, I was taught that no DBMS can implement many-to-many relationships, so a bridge entity needs to be created.
I tried to avoid many to may relationships when trying to relate their tables, it didn't work, so I assume I need to create other tables in order to fix the problem and avoiding the many-to-many relationships.
I was wondering is ok to leave the many-to-many relationships or I still need to create a bridge entity for it although filemaker allows me to have a many-to-many relationship?

kind regards,

Ayta

Answer
Hello Ayta;

Filemaker does allow many to many relationships.  Sometimes a join table is used as an in between to make the relationships cleaner.  What I would like for  you to do is send me your example of the data you are trying to relate.  If I can see what context you are working in and what problem you are trying to solve I can make a more specific suggestion.

Send me an email at jameykey@jkat.com
