About Jamey Key
Expertise
NEW and INTERMEDIATE USERS. WHAT CAN FILEMAKER PRO DO FOR ME? I have been using FileMaker products for over 10 years and have basic knowledge in all areas of FileMaker database set up and use. I`m not prepared to answer questions about complex situations or calculations but can help beginners and intermediate users set up and use FileMaker databases.

Experience
Have been using FileMaker since 1989 in our business. We have 10 users on the network who use these databases every day. Our largest databases have had over 30,000 records at one time. In 1995 one of my files was chosen as "Most Unique Database" in a contest sponsored by Claris, maker of FileMaker. Recently I have developed a set of files for new computer system installed at our church.

Question
Duplicating a Record Does Not Duplicate Related Records I would like to duplicate the "whole record" along with all the portal records. Can this be done easily.
thanks

Answer
Hello Chisel;

The answer is NO.  It cannot be done easily.  But it can be done.  It depends on how the portal records are connected to the main record you are looking at.  You may want to set up the relationship so that ALL records are related.  That way, they WOULD show up.  But you probably dont want to do that.  It sounds like you may have to duplicate the record and then duplicate all the portal records as well and set the appropriate linking field in those records.  This could become a lengthy script and Im not sure I would recommend it.  It really depends on what your application is.  I can think of many reasons why  you would not want to duplicate the portal records (you are actually duplicating main records in another table when you do that)

I know that is a crummy response.  If you would like to email me and give me more detail into what youre trying to accomplish, I will try and help you.
