About Jamey Key
Expertise
NEW and INTERMEDIATE USERS. WHAT CAN FILEMAKER PRO DO FOR ME? I have been using FileMaker products for over 10 years and have basic knowledge in all areas of FileMaker database set up and use. I`m not prepared to answer questions about complex situations or calculations but can help beginners and intermediate users set up and use FileMaker databases.

Experience
Have been using FileMaker since 1989 in our business. We have 10 users on the network who use these databases every day. Our largest databases have had over 30,000 records at one time. In 1995 one of my files was chosen as "Most Unique Database" in a contest sponsored by Claris, maker of FileMaker. Recently I have developed a set of files for new computer system installed at our church.

Question
Hello,

I am hoping you can help me out.  To say I'm a novice at Filemaker is greatly over-exaggerating my experiences....I have an Inventory database w/ almost 650 items in it w/ varying Categories.  I have created a few reports based off of some other tidbits of info I have listed for each item (Cost, Location, Notes, etc).  What I would like to have is a summary type report that will take each category and say that X number of items are in Category A and that Category A is Y% of the entire inventory (same for each other category, etc, etc).  I would like for this to be a simple stand alone report within the Inventory database.

Something that states like so:

Category    # of items     %of inventory
A                   44                  23%
B                   33                  33%
And so on…

I could make something like this work in Excel, but am at a loss on how to do it in Filemaker

Any assistance or insight you could provide is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Greg

Answer
Greg;

Im not sure I understand correctly.  In your example are you saying you want to show a percentage of Category A vs. the entire inventory?  so if there are 100 items in the inventory and 44 in Category A, the % would be 44?  and in category B (if there are 33 items there) the % would be 33%?  I just need to know which items  you are comparing.  Category as a percentage of entire inventory?

Send me an email if I need more clarification, then I will respond back.
