Question
What are the dates of the U.S. bear market of the 21st century

Answer
A "bear market" is defined as:

"A prolonged period in which investment prices fall, accompanied by widespread pessimism"

Using this definition as a base, I would assess the following to be examples of a bear market on the S&P 500 since January 1st 2000

September 2000 - February 2001
May 2001 - October 2001
January 2001 - May 2002
