Financial Stocks - chapter 11 or 13 concerns

Expert: Paul Henneman - 10/14/2008

Question
I own Circuit City stock and would like to know what happens to my stock if the company reorganizes, or files bankruptcy, or if it were to get taken over by another company.

Answer
Don,
Thank you for your question! Unfortunately it difficult to say what will happen. Every bankruptcy is different, it depends on what chapter of bankruptcy the company uses, and how the bankruptcy is administered. Your shares could still be worth something (sometimes it is even possible to see a positive return), or your shares could be completely worthless.
Below is a link to a government website that describes in detail various forms of bankruptcy, and most importantly for you how it affects stock and shareholders. This site is by the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission), a government body, so is completely reliable:

http://www.sec.gov/investor/pubs/bankrupt.htm

I hope this helps! Please do not hesitate to follow up with me if I can be of any further service!

Best Regards,
