Question
I found old share certificates for Centex Co., Inc.  The certificates have the former owner of my home's name on them.  Are they worth anything today?

Answer
Norma,
Thank you for your question! Usually old certificates are not worth anything, but there are exceptions to that. However, the certificate will usually only have value to the person on the certificate or their direct family. If you can, I would urge you to forward that certificate to its owner.
If you do want to find out if it is worth anything, the goal would be to contact the company's investor relations department. If the company still exists (and you can locate them through some google or other online searches), that is the best result. If the company no longer exists, they may have been bought or merged with another company and have a new name. It is remotely possible that certificate still has value if that happened. Searching for the original company name will often bring up press releases or other stories that can give you enough information to track this down.
If none of that works, there are services that you can hire to do a professional search for you. Here is a link to a website hosted by the government's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), so is a reliable source:

I hope that this helps! Please do not hesitate to follow up with me if I can be of any additional service,

Sincerely,
Paul Henneman
