Question
I have five Stock certificates from American Mining Company issued to G.D. O'Rear on 5/31/17 in Jasper Alabama.  Are these stocks worth anything now?

Answer
Martha,
Thank you for your question! Unfortunately, in all probability the stock certificates you have are no longer worth anything as far as the stock is concerned. Here is what I checked:
There does not appear to be any currently traded company by that name. There also seem to be few if any references when I google the company name. Probably the company went out of business, but it is possible that it was purchased or merged with another company, or it may have simply changed its name. For these reasons, there is a possibility that the stock certificate still has value.
I would suggest that you also do some searches on http://finance.yahoo.com, as well as on google, to make sure that I did not miss anything.  Below is a link to a page that summarizes some various services that will do a far more complete search for you, but they charge for this:

http://www.sec.gov/answers/oldcer.htm

The general goal is to find contact information for the company if it still exists, and contact their investor relations department for further information.

If you cannot find any information that would indicate the stock is still traded and has value, the final option would be to see if the certificate itself has value. There are collectors out there who seek out historical stock ceritificates. Again google searchers, or searches on Ebay.com, should provide an indication on if your certificates have any value as collectible items. It should be fairly simple to find a club or organization of collectors, where you could ask specifically about your certificates.

I hope that the above is helpful! Please do not hesitate to follow up with me if I can be of any additional service,

Sincerely,
Paul Henneman
