Question
QUESTION: I am in possession of a stock totaling Four shares from
"Southern Petroleum Corporation" shares are at 100.00 each. This was issued on 08/29/1938 in Pikeville, TN while living in Akron, OH. How do I know if this is any good?

ANSWER: Chris,

Thank you for your question! I did a quick search, and could not find any references to the company "Southern Petroleum Corporation" in the US. There are some vague references out there to a publicly traded company in Canada by that name, but it sounds like it is not the same company. It may be worth checking out, I simply did a google search for the company name, and found it associated with the ticker symbol CSPLF.

If you would like to know for sure what has happened to the company and if the stock is worth anything, here is a link that lists some services that can help:

There is always the chance that the company changed names, or was merged/acquired into another firm. The most likely scenario is that the stock is no longer worth anything, but that is never for certain. For less than $90 you can find out for certain, should you choose to spend some money on finding out.

I am sorry that I could not provide a specific answer for you, there appears to be little or no information out there to apply directly. I wish you the best,

Sincerely,

QUESTION: Some information my father discovered is that Southern Petroleum Corp changed to Can-Am on August 11, 1987. On April 5, 1990, Can-Am Industries changed to Save-On.
Automotive and subsequently changed into MIS Multimedia in addition to a 3 for 1 reverse stock split. In February. 1999, MIS changed to Cosmos.com.
In Nov. 2001, Cosmoz.com Inc. had underwent a 60 for 1 reverse stock split and a name change to Financialcontent Inc.
Not sure what all of this means and if it is indeed the same stock.Any ideas???
Thanks again for your information.
Chris

Answer
Thank you Chris for the follow up!

It can depend greatly on the type of merger, aquisition, or name change if your original certificates are still worth something. I did find a reference to FinancialContent Inc, it appears to be currently trading at about 3 cents a share. Based on the reverse splits, your shares may be worth only a few dollars, if they are worth anything at all.
The only thing to do would be to contact the current company, if they are publicly traded they should have an 'investors relations' link on their website. If not, any 'contact' information on their website will do. Give them a call or send an email with as much information as you can, and have your certificates ready in front of you. It is a long shot, but worth the inquiry.  I did some google searches and found them at www.financialcontent.com, here is a direct link to their contact information:

I hope that this helps! Please do not hesitate to follow up with me if I can be of any additional service,
