Question I am soon to be graduating college and entering this crazy financial world that we live in today. My dream job is to become a stock broker or trader of some sort and follow in the footsteps of my dad, but times have changed since my father has been on wall street and I with the economy in the shape that it is in I do not know how to go about doing this. I have been applying to job postings online and trying to network, but it is hard for me to network in Miami where I go to school when I am looking for a job in NYC. I was wondering what advice you could share with me in getting into this type of job?
Answer Jeremy,
Thank you for your question!
Yes, unfortunately it is probably the most difficult time in many decades to be looking to get your start in finance. Particularly traders, most major investment houses are struggling to survive and letting large percentages of their current staff go, rather than hiring.
But, I do have some suggestions. There is generally always a need for financial advisors. This may not be exactly what you want to do as it is a bit different than being a trader, but if you can get into the industry and begin building some experience any way you can. Most major banks and investment houses have various training programs. Typically, you would go through a several month internship or training program, with a job waiting for you when you complete the process. Most of these companies have information about these programs on their websites, under the 'Careers' section. Here are some examples:
Also, please do send me a copy of your resume. If I come across anything, I would be happy to submit it for you. You can go to www.ValuEngine.com, click on the "About Us and VE Models" text link on the very top right of the home page, and send to the email address listed under our contact information. Just put Attention Paul Henneman in the subject line.
I wish you the best! Get yourself out there any way you can, attend lectures and any type of financial event, and do your best to meet people in the industry.
Sincerely,
Paul Henneman
