I wrote you before about researching an old stock and you pointed me in the right direction.
I have one share of Marriott corporation stock from december 12 1973.
That has since become Host Marriott.
Now I need to determine how many shares it has become and the approximate value of those shares today.
I went to yahoo finance.com and I could not figure how to work the sight.
Can you tell me how many shares this has become or where I can find out.
I would rather learn how to fish than be given the info on a platter.
I thank you in advance for your trouble.
Answer Bryon,
Thank you for your follow up question!
The main thing to research is how many times the stock has split. Google Finance I find is actually a little easier to use than Yahoo, and in some cases has more timely data. Here is the link to get started: http://finance.google.com
At the top, there should be a box to enter a company name or ticker symbol. If you enter Marriott, then click the "get quotes" button, it will take you to a page with a chart and other information on Marriott. I checked and as of 3:15pm on Thursday, the stock trades at about 24.58 per share.
In the chart, you can select different time frames. Select 'Max' for the longest time frame it can display, and you will see a small green indicator marked S. Put your mouse on that, and you will see that the stock split on June 12, 2006, in 2 for 1 split. This means each share became two shares.
However, the maximum time I could get the chart to display was back to 1999. There very well could have been other splits before 1999.
There is a table listing stock splits on Marriott on this page. You would be interested in any split after 1973. The first after that date was a 5 for 1 split in 1986. At that time, one share turned into five shares. next split was a 2 for 1 split in 1998, so five shares turned into ten shares. Last split was 2 for 1 in 2006 that we already mentioned above, so 10 shares turned into 20.
It appears that for each share of stock obtained in 1973, you would now have 20 shares, those 20 shares would be worth about $491 today.
I hope that this helps? Please do not hesitate to follow up with me if I can be of any additional service,
Sincerely,
Paul Henneman
