Question Hi, my fiancee is a buisness major in college now. Well actually he is to that point where he has gotten past most of his basic buisness / required classes. Now he is to decide upon his major in the field of buisness.
The thing he keeps repeating to me again and again is that he should just change his major .. He says: "Because, coming from as poor of a background as he has.. he says, you first have to have a good bit of money to get them to even loan you any money. You have to have a good paying job." -- We talked about once he gets his degree that maybe he could apply for management type of position and that then maybe this would help, but he says, "No, it is almost as if they can just "smell" white trash; being as poor as we are I doubt that I will ever be able to open my own buisness." So, he does not think that he will ever be able to get any money loaned to him, as he doubts that (and as they say.. even w/a degree), anyone would ever even consider him for management. -- Now, I tell him "Just keep doing what you're doing, you only have 1 more year, so just get your degree and then see what happens."
Maybe this is all futile? I don't know which way I should steer him. He says he doesn't want to be miserable his whole life, and I certainly don't blame him -- neither do I!
Any suggestions on what we should do? (Melissa)
Answer First of all if your fiancé does not believe in himself – nobody will. It shows during the interview (according to my experience as employer). In manager I want to see a leader.
So tell him to get over his pessimistic approach to life by himself or get professional help. A lot of people with great potentials simply talk themselves into failure - it is a scientific fact.
Some people start with simple jobs like mortgage broker to save money for a big thing. Check this website: http://by0835.wlgweb.com/
About loans. Yes it takes 20-30% down payment to get a secured loan. But most small businesses in the USA need under 50K to start. He can apply for unsecured loan (need to have 680+ credit score): http://www.AmericaOneUnsecured.com/?AID=47737
