Question
Hello Joyce,
I have been an automotive mechanic for 33 years, spent working at three different places. I was fired today after spending 11 years at my last place of employment.. I'm very confident in my abilities, but I am also fully aware that age is an important factor when looking for another position. I am aware that now may be the time to get out of the auto repair business, but what would a 58 year old man, with no higher education have to offer to the work force?

Answer
Hi, this question is right up my alley. I specialize in life transitions. I know it's tough right now. Believe me the first time I lost a big job I had I was devastated and it took me 6 months to get my bearings. BUT there are opportunities out there for you. First you did not say where you are living. I am assuming it is in teh United states. So the first thing I would suggest is that you look for some temporary work. And the jobs I saw online for auto repair and mechanics are ALL in the Federal or state government sector. THEY CANNOT descriminate by law. All city, federal and state organizations like police and schools (busses/vans) all have mechanics who work on staff taking care of their care fleet. I remember reading just last week that in Los Angeles the police department keeps 1000 cars on loan to its employees who drive them part of the time or all of the time. All those cars must be serviced by the city mechanics because of course the police will not take their cars and pay elsewhere. So that is an opportunity look at federal, state and city jobs. Also lots of car dealerships keep a mechanic on staff or on call in case they have issues-- this could be a nice side business. Get some cards printed up that say MECHANIC ON CALL and drop them off at the car dealers in your are or have a friend or preferably an attactive woman drop them off since most dealers are MEN :)

You may want to buy my book called SUCCESSFUL RECAREERING which is on Amazon.com at a massive discount and that should help you through the transition. It was written for people like you who were laid off fired or quit YESTERDAY !

My other new book THE VISION BOARD www.ihaveavision.org will give you a way to create a visual map for your life. Because yes, now may be the time to change your life. Many retirement communities have mechanics on call -- so that could be another source of income.

Here is one inspirational story I saw online about a mechanic who bought a DeLorean franchise  -- fascinating story -- may inspire you -- good luck to you. And you can sign up for my newsletter @ www.visionboard.info :)) js.
