Finding Your Purpose in Life - Trades

Expert: Joyce Schwarz - 9/17/2009

Question
Joyce
My son graduated from high school last year and since then he has been working as a delivery driver.
He wanted to take a year off from education to think about what he wants to do.
He has decided he would like to go to trade school now, however, he cant decide what trade.
Fortuneatly, the city where we live has a large vocational college with most of the major trades.
He never has any hobbies, isnt particularly interested in cars or fixing stuff.
Can you suggest a few trades that might interest him?
I have held a few jobs over the years and I told him what I didnt like-Hotel/restaurant-lots of night work, low wages.
-Outside construction i.e.carpentry-we live in a cold  climate
-skilled trades like pipefitting where you have to move from job to job.
-trades like machinist where you are always in a smelly shop environment.

I know its a lot to ask for, but can you think of a few trades with a good work environment, are fairly interesting, and generally in demand?

Thanks SO much!

Answer
Hi, I have no idea where you are in Canada. Obviously the first thing that comes to mind is trucking -- because that is the kind of thing -- long haul trucking that is always in demand. With a little bit of research I see the Canadian government is offering a $1000 grant for trade training in something called the workskills program-- my suggestion is that maybe your son wants to ask some of the counselors at that kind of program for insight into what kind of trade he wants -- they seem to range from auto repair to electrician/plumbing etc. All of these trades will be in demand for the next 20 years. No robot is going to replace them. Here is the link to the Canada office which tells more.. GOOD LUCK:
