Subject: I truly need to find a fufilling career

Question
Hello,
I am a thirty five year old, married father from NY. My four year old daughter starts school this year and I am growing worried about my career goals and financial stability moving forward.
I have worked full time jobs in a variety of fields and capacities but unfortunately none of them have appealed to me in a long term sense.
As a teen I worked full time in music retail while attending high school and college. I have played in semi-successful bands as a guitarist and have always enjoyed writing and creating music. I have also throughout my life had a passion for fiction writing and writing in general. I love film, philosophy, creative writing, and pop culture. I am fairly well read and have always had an outgoing personality for the most part.
Once in college I switched majors several times ranging  from Psychology, Communications, Pre-law, and finally Creative Writing. I was accomplished at most of my studies but always felt hesitant to commit to one career path.
I received my Associates Degree from a local community college with a concentration and honors in English. I had two short stories published in well known literary journals while attending that school.
Besides several jobs I have held as a music retail store manager, I have also held a variety of other jobs such as launch boat operator, school bus driver, pizza delivery person and so on while attending college. I was forced to work around school scheduling and would often leave and return to jobs while in school.
While trying to obtain my Bachelor's degree in Creative Writing at CW Post College I took an interest in philosophy and debate and was the captain of my debate team. I entertained the idea of going to law school, which my parents shot down do to the cost.
At this time I started working as a quality assurance tester for a video game software company. I enjoyed my work thoroughly and did well with the company being promoted three times and leading projects with up to thirty testers under my management. I gained positive reviews and the confidence of my manager but found that the company paid almost nothing and was actually withholding my pay raises do to poor business. Shortly before graduating I experienced some serious life issues regarding my parents, a failed seven year relationship and financial issues from my company failing.
I left school only about a semester short of my Bachelor's degree still owing them about ten thousand dollars. I was laid off from my job when they went out of business and decided to get involved with more Q.A. work testing security software. It was also fulfilling but after a year with that company I was laid off due to out sourcing post 9-11. I have since taken many jobs to make ends meet. I met my wife and have struggled financially while she was pregnant with my daughter. I have worked as an industrial metals salesmen, NYC Cab Driver, Video Game Retail Manager (Commuting 150 miles a day for the job) and most recently a position as a Master Control operator on an overnight shift for a leading cable television company in my area, who in past years has also been failing. I spent almost five years with that company before being let go just before Thanksgiving.

I feel like most of the "jobs" that I have worked have made little or no use of my real talents and skills. I am a fairly intelligent, practical and creative person with good verbal and written skills. I have a good deal of management experience as well as sales and customer service skills. I have had my IQ rated on professional tests in the 138 range. I have been told through out my life to pursue practical means of employment and not waste my time with creative pursuits.

The retail positions I have worked at in the past have been fairly fulfilling but the long hours, limited upward mobility, erratic schedules and lack of quality time with my daughter has made me dissatisfied. The video game quality assurance position that I held was extremely interesting and put my analytical nature to good work. I enjoyed the industry but the company work environment was worse than that of a high school at times. The managers at that company always put personal relationships unrelated to work ability ahead of what was good for business. I also know that my experience in the field is several years old and most companies in that industry hire at an entry level position which pays very low.

I unfortunately dislike corporate politics, especially when it borders on nepotism and favoritism. I found that at the Cable company that I worked for that my management team was complete inept at the practical application of their jobs. They were generally unhelpful and seemed to lack any sort of interest in their employees skills, career progression or abilities. Many times people were hired to just fill seats regardless of their background.
I still continue to do freelance writing of short fiction, reviews, articles and such for online sources but can not get a steady paying position.
My last career paid me close to forty thousand dollars a year which for my location was just enough to meet my family's need for shelter, transportation, food and utilities. This is only after declaring bankruptcy two years ago for all the credit card bills I had obtained.
Now that I am unemployed again and have no real career path I feel like I will basically be living in poverty.
I want the best for my daughter, who is a very bright and intelligent child but in order to make her happy I must find a career that I am also happy with, in order to be successful. I have considered returning to school to finish my degree but really have no idea what to pursue.
What are my options for careers based on my skill set and what type of majors would be required to break into these fields?
I appreciate any help I can get.
Thank you.
