Question
Where can I research a painters background/bio and worth of his work? I have 3 paintings from the early 20th century (2 Austrian: Josef Scherier, Robert Novack. and Richard Schultz, known as the Italian Chigall whom I was told is worth money.

Answer
Hi Jan, I am not familiar enough with those artists to give you good information. I suggest checking out http://www.artcyclopedia.com/ which is a great source of references of artists. Also, check out Christies http://www.christies.com/ and Sothebys http://www.sothebys.com/ auction houses. They share some of their auction records online.

For prices, I suggest finding the catalog raisonnes for those artists, and auction catalogs that feature their work. Both are usually not free, but will give you the best information out there.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Andrew Evans
