Question
Hello

I was wondering if you would be able to tell me anything about a Oil painting I purchased 30 years ago at a church rummage sale. Its a self portrait of Rembrandt with his wife Saskia. On the inside edge of the canvas it reads, c/790 Rembrandt portrait Du Peintre Avec Saskia, Ediz 1oN1 printed In Milano Italy Beatrice D' Este. On the front of the painting center left is a signature Rembrandt the painting measures 16in by 12in apx. It also has a name plate on the frame V R Rembrandt .Any help identifying this and it's age would be appreciated. I have taken some pictures if that would help. I've been looking online with no luck.I know a larger one hangs in a museum in Germany.
I also have a rather large weaved/tapestry framed with a name plate that reads 'Gobelins Les Buveurs. In the Picture are nine people, 6 men 3 women which looks like a tavern with kegs of refreshments being enjoyed by all. The men wearing swords at there sides and chickens roaming about the floors.

Answer
In most cases, the prints turn out to be museum store posters, prints or even relicas that were painted by an unknown studio artist.  Museums have been selling imitation paintings of famous works for many years, common practice.  These days, we see museums selling posters on paper and independent companies/artists selling repicas on the internet.  If I thought you had a real Rembrandt painting, I'd want to come see it, but so far, all I see these days are copies. You can always take it to a gallery and ask what they think, you will prob get a similar answer.

Expertise

I can answer questions about Salvador Dali. While I cannot do FREE APPRAISALS, I might be able to help you sell your works. I can also help with Chagall, Miro, Picasso and other 20th Century Masters.

Questions about a type of art or medium can be answered with one response in most cases. Technical issues are easier to deal with than specifics about an artist. If you need help finding values or history on an artist, it will probably involve research that can sometimes take hours to complete. If you have more than one image to send, I will give you an alternate email address as this system cannot handle multiple images.
