Fine Art/A romantic painting I once saw

Hello, this is a real long shot, but a painting has been bugging me for more than 20 years. I saw it once in either an encyclopaedia or book but I can't remember its artist or title (unless "ravine" was part of its title). If I did I would search for a print of it. It was clearly part of the romantic landscape movement and showed a storm in a mountain defile or ravine, but probably NOT a snowstorm. Steep terrain (a pass?), with swirling violent movement similar to Turner in style but probably not by him (I have searched his paintings and I'm sure I would remember if it was his). The landscape MAY have included castle or ruins and was definitely continental rather than American. The depiction was romantic in the extreme and that's what I liked about it. Hardly much to go on I know but if any possible artists come to mind please let me know. I have searched images of prints and romantic art to no avail. Thank you.

Dear Paul,

Your description sounds so much like other landscapes during the romanticism movement; that your only option is to look at the works of the most well known artists. I have included a list of romantic landscape artist from the period to assist in your research. I hope you find your "needle" in the haystack.
