i have a oil on canvas painting by fm bennet dated 1942 the size is 34inches by28inches with frame it is also signed. It is in excellent condition could you tell me roughly what its worth and the nearest auction rooms closest to kent in england ............ many thanks

Answer
You certainly have a painting of worth, if it is an original piece.  Frank Moss Bennett is a well known fine artist, specializing in genre pictures, precisely like the one you show.  You have a very large picture.  I would not mess around on the Internet too much, but find at least two dealers and perhaps an auction house to which you might send your pictures.  Send pictures of the front, including frame, and the backside showing the canvas.  As highly detailed as you can.  Closeups of the signature.

The big auction houses in London...Sotheby's Christies and Bonhams have each offered Bennett's work multiple times.  Pieces very much like yours have attracted as much as 45,000 pound sterling, but more typically fetch 10,000 - 15,000.  Often these paintings go unsold at auction, so it must be a fairly narrow market.  Especially for the larger pieces.  I might estimate yours to be in the high end (15,000) of this range, but depending on the money in the room it could go much higher, or lower.  Certainly, a dealer would not make you an offer at these levels, but need to leave themselves room.  Perhaps offering you 5,000-8,000.   That is, if this is truly an original.

Best to have a pro put eyeballs directly on the canvas.  Don't have it cleaned...dealers prefer pictures in original condition.  I cannot vouch for dealers in the UK, but here are some links to study and get you started:

One final word - please do not be disappointed if this picture turns out to be a copy or reproduction....highly possible.  In that case, you'd still have a very handsome picture in what looks to be a nice frame.  Something to hang on the wall and enjoy every day!

Best of luck,
Stu
