Fine Art/Degas - SMB Oil on Board Painting

Degas Painting
Degas Painting
Dear Expert,
I purchased this oil on board painting at a Estate Sale for a very
wealthy Boeing family member in Hilton Head, SC. She was a artist,
but all of her works seemed to be watercolors. Perhaps, she also
painted this oil painting, not sure. The back of the board reads:
Fulton Canvas Board. It seems to be a nice reproduction of a famous Edgar Degas painting, nicely framed, is signed (LR): Degas / SMB. I wish I knew more regarding it's history, origin, age, and value. I would love to hear your thoughts, comments, or evaluation. Thanking you in advance for any help or guidance.
Best, Chris

Yes, Chris, I agree with you.  The figures certainly
remind us of the work of Edgar Degas.  I do not know
who SMB would be, and suspect you are spot on -- chiefly,
that this is a copy of a Degas work done by an admiring
artist or student artist.  Perhaps the Boeing heiress you
mention. Or, even more likely, perhaps she just spotted it
in a HH gallery and wished to hang it.

In either case, I'd recommend you send nice big photos of front
and back and closeup of the signature over to Neal Auction House
in New Orleans.  Or if possible, carry it in.  Nothing like the
eyeballs of a professional.  Neal is a highly reputable, nationally
known auction house.

If you do intend to sell it, another though would be to simply
list it on eBay for "Degas lovers", etc.  Either way, my guess
is what you already suspect: you have a nice piece of decorative
art, emblematic of the famous painter, and probably worth $100-$150
at best in a sale. (Or consider donating it to a local art school.)
But if you like it...hang it.  Enjoy it!

Best of luck!
