Fine Art/Laura Wheeler Waring



Hi- I purchased a portrait painting several years ago for a bargain price at auction and believe it or not just now getting down to seriously researching it. I will attach a photos of the painting the signature is on the verse. I believe it to be by Laura Wheeler Waring. I am only inquiring to see if you would agree or not. I can tell it is framed in what I would call a temporary frame as there are nail holes around the perimeter of the piece as if it was previously framed which are no longer being used and instead is clipped on all four sides to hold it in place. It measures 31" x 23.5". Appreciate any feedback.

Thank you for the question about the  American  artist called  Laura  Wheeler Waring ( 1887 –1948).
With  regard to the authenticity of the work, ordinary photographic images provide but a few of the many indicators, which are  needed to  establish  proof of identity.
It could possibly, be a work (copy) of the later part of the  1920’s.
Signatures are only one of a great many indicators which must all tally, in order to be of convincing proof.

However it is  not anything similar stylistically, to her usual oeuvre - which is much more fluid and lose and indeed  the use of colours, is also way off target when thinking of  the usual works by Laura  Wheeler Waring.

Unfortunately, some alarm bells are ringing, but further examination is really needed.

There are a few  more steps needed in order to achieve more clarity as to, if it really is a genuine original painting, rather than a colour litho print/reproduction; or just a fake.

A real time inspection by a reputable  auction house, can make a very good assessment; as to condition and value, etc.
The average prices for those works it  all depends on; size, artist, quality, provenance, subject matter and condition- which are all highly important -  and also do also vary a great deal.

The local yellow pages and the internet, should point you in the direction of the auction houses in your own  location,
I would strongly advise, in taking it along to at least 2 different auction houses for a valuation. Second opinions, are always very beneficial indeed.
I might suggest, that  the more likely candidates for such an examination would be  either; Bonhams, Christies, or Sothebys.

Furthermore; should you desire to take it to auction - then I would also advise on selling it with a fixed bottom end reserve - but perhaps with a 10% auctioneers discretion, which is quite reasonable.

Selling without a fixed reserve, is definitely not to recommended.

I am unable to answer enquiries concerning objects, which are NOT related to the areas of Fine Art and Antiques. Nor will I; on the sole basis of any photographic images be willing to give any definitive monetary valuations, or monetary opinions. In such cases I would always advise on getting “real time” valuations and opinions from reputable and qualified auction houses, or third parties. True valuations always need a direct “hands on” approach, with perhaps also the necessary research and verifications. So please; Do post good clear overall images, with your question(s). Failing to do so, may cause rejection, which is also a great pity.
