Fine Art/Chagall and Picasso prints

Hi Dolly,
Two questions, both concerning lots in my local auction house.
Chagall Giclee, The Birthday, Signed 33/375 Size 58cm x 43cm.
Picasso Nude under a Tree. 57/125 Signed.
Probabilities on being genuine, please. The Giclee Chagall gives me most concern as I have no records of genuine Chagall giclees.

Dear David,

I hope you are doing well. Both of these prints give me more than pause. Nude under a Tree was done as an oil painting and to my knowledge and research; Picasso never released this as a lithograph or etching during his lifetime. The only original print I could find even close in title is an etching titled Two Nudes in a Tree.

The signed Chagall Giclee is definitely not original. Giclee’s did not become popular until well after Chagall’s death in 1985. Maybe the “signed” part is a plate signature. Giclees can be made on ANY art. All you have to do is scan an image and then print on a large printer such as an Epson. Any one printing these can create a “limited edition”.

I may be wrong, but if you are looking for original prints from these modern masters, keep looking.

I hope this information is helpful.

Best regards,

Fine Art
