Fine Art/Maurice V. Utrillo Painting

We have a painting with signature signed on the right by Utrillo,Maurice V. It's a street scene in a small town with a church at the end of the street. It appears to be an oil painting but it is not on canvas it is more like oil on board. The back of the painting is marked VP412. Utrillo:Eglise de Strins 30x24. Could this be an original.

Dear Mary, It is extremely unlikely that you have an original painting by Utrillo. He is possibly the most copied and faked artist of the 20th century. You can find "Utrillo paintings" at nearly any resale or Goodwill store. Unless you have evidence that your painting came from an important collection or was sold by a major art gallery I would not suggest spending much time on research. However, if you want to pursue more information, most major art museum libraries will have "The Complete Works of Maurice Utrillo" by Paul Petrides, publ. Paris 1959-1974, 5 vols., 2,849 illus. This catalogue raisonne can be purchased from Sims Reed for about $5,000.
