Fine Art/Possible Alice Neel Self Portrait

Question
Hello Alan, I have aquired an Oil on Canvas 16" x 20". It is portrait I believe of Alice Neel from the 1970s. There are a lot of photos of her from 1980 and beyond but she was heavier in the 70's, like my painting. It is not a pretty piece of art however, the subject herself, is not very pleasing to the eye lets just say. It looks like her style although, there is fading of painting in the lower corners, it looks like a formal portrait. It does seem to be signed with he signature however, and I have seen other paintings by her (Old Guys) that were quite ugly (the Subject that is) go for over $80,000. Anyway it is a shock to first see it, it may put off a lot people but still I would think this being only one of 2 self portraits of her, it must be worth something to someone even if only in a historical sense. Any thoughts on this greatly appreciated! Here are some links to some photos below, they are not the best quality, it looks better in person.

Thanks so much! Jim.

Answer
Jim--I am not an expert on Neel's work, but if it is indeed an original, it could be quite valuable.  I looked at some auction records, and in 2005 pieces went for $40,000 plus, and those would be a little less than a retail price.  Perhaps Sotheby's or Christie's could give you some guidance as to authenticity and value.  Good luck.  Alan.
