Fine Art/Possible original Picasso - how can I tell?

My step mother has a Picasso print which was given to her back in the early 70's. I have been tasked with the challenge of finding out if it's an original artwork or not - the frame is locked air tight. I have taken some photos of it on my cell phone with the attempt to get it appraised. Is there any way to rule out if it's an original painting before I go through the effort of taking it in to an appraiser.

You say the frame is locked air tight?  Is there glass in front of the image?  An oil painting would not have glass.

If you have a work on paper that is limited edition or is a drawing, the glass makes sense.

What are the markings on the front?
If you see any editions numbers, then it's an etching, engraving or lithograph.

Need more details.

I can answer questions about Salvador Dali. While I cannot do FREE APPRAISALS, I might be able to help you sell your works. I can also help with Chagall, Miro, Picasso and other 20th Century Masters.

Questions about a type of art or medium can be answered with one response in most cases. Technical issues are easier to deal with than specifics about an artist. If you need help finding values or history on an artist, it will probably involve research that can sometimes take hours to complete. If you have more than one image to send, I will give you an alternate email address as this system cannot handle multiple images.
