Subject: Going from Germany to Helsinki/Tallin

Question
Hi Jim,

I live near Flensburg and would like to take my husband and my son to Helsinki/Tallin for a short holiday sometime soon (maybe late March). What would be the best and cheapest way to get there (and back?) any ideas? I am not German so I cannot read all the German pages.

Many thanks,

Mel

Answer
Hi Mel,

Greetings from sunny Finland.

You could take a ferry from Travemünde ( http://www.ferrycenter.fi/index.php?240 ) or Rostock ( http://www.tallinksilja.com/en/ ) to Helsinki.

However, low cost airlines often have much cheaper offers than those ferries. You should check these airlines:

http://www.airberlin.com

http://www.airbaltic.com

http://www.ryanair.com (Just now very cheap offers from Frankfurt-Hahn to Tampere if you book tickets very quickly. There are very good and fast train connections between Tampere and Helsinki, see http://www.vr.fi/heo/eng/index.html , please.)

http://wizzair.com (Some extremely cheap tickets, but the departure is from Gdansk, Poland, and the arrival to Turku, Finland. And flights won't begin before April. There are very good and fast train connections between Turku and Helsinki, see http://www.vr.fi/heo/eng/index.html , please.)

I recommend that you stay overnight in Helsinki ( http://groups.msn.com/FinlandTravelClub/helsinki.msnw ) and book a boat trip from Helsinki to Tallinn (one day excursion or with staying overnight in Tallinn). There are many very good and fast boat companies operating between Helsinki and Tallinn:

http://www.tallinksilja.com/en/

http://www.vikingline.fi/index.asp?lang=en

http://www.lindaliini.ee/index.php?lang=en (Very cheap offers if you book tickets very soon.)

http://www-eng.njl.fi/index.html

http://www.eckeroline.fi/en/default.aspx (Usually very reasonable prices.)

http://www.superseacat.com/en/ (beginning in April)

For more details about Finland and Estonia see http://www.tte.ch , please.

What kind of accommodation ( http://groups.msn.com/FinlandTravelClub/accommodation.msnw ) would you like to get?

If you need help with finding a reasonable priced accommodation suitable also for your son, please don't hesitate to contact me and tell your wishes.

Kindest regards,

Jim
