Question
Jim,
My daughter is in 1st grade. Her class is hosting Christmas in Europe.  She is responsible for presenting Finland.  Would love ideas about links/country highlights geared towards children.  Also, recipes/traditional dress of children would be much appreciated, as she needs to dress the part and bring food typical of Finland.  Thank you!

Answer
Dear Nikki,

Greetings from Finland, Santa's home country!

We believe that Santa Claus lives in Finland, on a fell (an arctic treeless mountain) named Korvatunturi (Ear Mountain in English) in the municipality of Savukoski, Lapland. He can't live at the North Pole because there isn't anything to eat for his reindeer there. In Finnish Lapland a reindeer is a very common animal.

I collected some links (for children) about Finnish Christmas in English:

And here some Finnish Christmas recipes:

Gingerbread cookies (and gingerbread houses) are very typical also in Finland.

There are also many very nice Finnish books about Finland, Christmas and Santa Claus in English. For more details see http://www.maurikunnas.net , please.

It is very hard to say anything about a traditional dress of children. At least a red Santa hat is typical but otherwise there isn't a very clear tradition. Perhaps something red but it isn't easy to say anything else.

Don't hesitate to contact me if you want to get more detailed answers.

Hyvää joulua (= Merry Christmas)!

Jim
