Answer
Greetings!

Your question pertains to the local requirements in South Africa to become a firefighter. Since each Fire Department may have different requirements, it is necessary for you to contact your local fire service to determine what are the specifics. Unfortunately, I was unable to find particular information about South Africa.

Most fire departments will provide training to their recruits. However, some fire departments will host only volunteer firefighters whereas others will employ paid firefighters. Note that I am not making any distinction on professionalism as both of them clearly are professionals in the job they perform. However, likeliness to obtain a job as a firefighter will depend on this factor.

Other than the public service, some manufacturing companies, and oiling companies, employ firefighters as part of their emergency response teams.

I hope this helps you to find more information. If there is anything else I can do for you, please feel free to ask.

Sincerely,

Gustavo E. Flores
