Answer Ashley,
I have little knowledge of contract firefighting. My advice would be to apply to test for a municipal department as typically, these jobs are much more stable. Your prior certifications will get you preference points at a lot of departments. Contract departments are subject to the whims of the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) so if they decide not to renew a contract you are out of a job. Municipal firefighters are covered by labor agreements as well as legislation that protects their rights and these departments are part of the AHJ so there is no contract to renew. Train hard for the physicals and be willing to relocate. Departments will tell you exactly what their tests consist of- you just have to ask. You can also improve your chances by obtaining your paramedic certification but this is a significant commitment of time and energy. A lot of junior colleges offer these programs. Good luck!
