Various awards and citations. My oddest "call" was at my company picnic, in a remote area, when someone at the picnic had heart failure. While trying to perform CPR I was also giving directions to ALS and BLS to get to the scene. Every alarm is an accomplishment.

Question
QUESTION: Hello, I'm 15 years old and turning 16 in two months. I'm interested in joining a volunteer fire department around Albany,New York. I was wandering, because my age will prevent me from doing some the regular duties of firemen. What specifically will I be doing as a firemen at my age?

ANSWER: Josh~

Glad to see you are interested in a joining the ranks. It's a noble profession, volunteer or paid, it is still a profession.

Basically, you'll be able to operate wherever there is not specific fire ground dangers. Some tools you may be able to train with, but not use until 18.

The best place to call is the State Fire Administrator's office.

They will have exactly the answers you need. their web site is packed FULL of info too;

Hope this helps and good luck.

QUESTION: Could I be an exterior firefighter?

Answer
Josh~
Sorry for the delay...thought I had answered this one.

You can do exterior duties outside of the scene in some states, but will not be allowed in te hot zone or near the fire scene. Fire department insurance companies and many state child labor laws do not allow it.
