Fire & Emergency Careers, And Fire Safety Info - Degree or paramedic?

Expert: Gustavo E. Flores - 10/22/2009

Question
What helps most when applying for a job in your opinion, Fire Science degree or paramedic certification? I'm almost done with my Air Force enlistment and have my fire/EMT certs so I'm trying to decide which one to go for. Thanks in advance for your input.

Answer
Hi Kristopher,

It all depends on where you want to go look for a job. Some systems are a combination of fire and EMS service. Others are purely one of them. Most fire departments will train its recruits as firefighters, therefore, I'd suggest you continue the medical training and then pursue the firefighting academy in the department of your preference.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Gustavo E. Flores
