Question Hallo,
I am 33.5 yrs old and interested in becoming a fire fighter.
I have 2 questions:
1. I am currently a full time employee and would like to sign up for the quickest fire fighter program. What do you think about the online programs (like www.trainingdivision.com)compare to a traditional academy?
2. In your professional opinion, do you think at my age, I will still be competitive against younger applicants even though I am in a good physical condition?
Any guidance will be appreciated.
Thank You.
Answer Jason,
I wouldn't worry about the on-line firefighter training. Any department that hires you will train you and as far as I know the only way to obtain true firefighter certification is to be a member of a fire department, either paid or volunteer. One of the best things you could do is check into EMT/Paramedic certification at your local junior college. Most departments give preference points for these certifications. Also, if you have a specific department in mind go talk to them and see what they require and what their entry tests are like so you can train specifically for it.
As far as competing, as long as you are in very good physical shape you should have no problem competing in the exam. the rest is usually reading comprehension and/or mechanical aptitude and your age/experience might actually give you an advantage. Good luck.
