Question
hi, i am a British citizen and currently serving in the Armed Forces. I'm going to leave the army and have always wanted to join the British fire service at some time. Another ambition of mine is to live in America. So i was thinking why not see if i can do both at once and join the American fire service. This is the first time i have looked into this and was wondering:

a)   If this possible

b)   how would i go about starting off the process?

c)   what qualifications would i need?

Any help you can give would be very much appreciated.

Answer
Hi Christopher,
Unless you have some skeletons in your closet such as a rough criminal record, you should be OK.
Start the process by study. Get a copy of the IFSTA 4th Ed, and start reading. See if you can get on your local volunteer dept to get some experience.
Some departments require no qualifications at all, others require a BA.
Were I you, I would read the IFSTA book cover to cover at least once.
Start applying and testing as much as you can.
If you have the resources you would do well by going through a recruit academy. That would give you everything you need to get on with one of the larger departments. (Money!!!!)

Good luck, and welcome to the service.
Mike
