Fire & Emergency Careers, And Fire Safety Info - how to become a firefighter

Expert: John Grussing - 7/25/2009

Question
Hi, I've been searching on the Internet alot about how to become a firefighter. Do you have to take classes at college before they accept you into an academy? Also at what age do they prefer you to be in when you start the steps towards becoming a firefighter?

Answer
Adrian,
Sorry I took a while to respond- I've been on vacation. The requirements to become a firefighter vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. A few departments require an Associates degree in anything to test for their department. However, most departments only require a high school education. Remember that fire department testing is highly competitive and are based on a points system. Many departments award prefrence points for EMT/paramedic certification. Paramedic certification takes about 2 years and is available through many junior colleges. You may also get points for Firefighter II certification but you pretty much have to be on a department to get this. So if you live somewehere that has a volunteer department you may want to join so you can get this. The majority of fire departments require a candidate to be at least 21 years old on the date of appointment. Keep your financial/criminal recors absolutely perfect and make sure people that know you would describe you as a person of good character because the department will conduct an intensive background investigation. Military service will also earn you points and introduce you to the rigors of performing on a military environment (fire departments are para-military organizations). If you have a specific department in mind check with them and they will tell you their requirements. Hope this helps. Write me again if you have any more questions. Good luck!!
