About Frank Billington
Expertise
Let me help you determine the most effective place to install your smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, and other home fire safety equipment. I can give you tips on home fire and safety inspection. So often the poor placement and care of life safety tools results in loss of life and property that could so easily be avoided. As a firefighter since 1993, I am intimately familiar with fire behavior, and steps you can take to protect yourself and your family.

Experience
I have been in firefighting since 1993. I determined to become a firefighter at the age of 11, and achieved that goal. But God and my family come first.

Fire & Emergency Careers, And Fire Safety Info - Fire in Oven

Expert: Frank Billington - 9/5/2009

Question
This morning there was a small fire on the floor of the oven caused by some residue from previous cooking (mostly pie filling) and overspill of butter from a breakfast bread.  We used a Kidde BC Dry Chemical Powder Fire Extinguisher.  After letting everything cool, I vaccumed the powder that I could and wiped all the other surfaces inside the oven with a sponge and clean water.  I removed all the burnt residue as well as all of the powder (although I am currently waiting for the oven to dry out completely so I can recheck that all powder residue is gone).  Is there anything else I should do prior to re-using my oven?  (It is an electric oven).

Thank you.

Answer
Hello Linda,

First, congrats on having an extinguisher handy.  So many people are unprepared, it is always nice to hear form someone who was ready.

This question has been posed here before, so I am going to share a link with you from the comprehensive question-and-answer session from that event, instead of trying to answer it all over again.

If you have any remaining questions or concerns not addressed by the discussion found at this link, please let me know and I will do my very best to help.
