Question
I would like to go to Iraq as a Firefighter, through Wackenhut Services. Can you tell me about Wackenhut? I am A Philadelphia F.F.Thank You

Answer
Bill,

I've not worked directly with Wackenhut in years (in fact the last time I had direct dealings with them was during the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville--they provided security for the US Pavilion).  However, that being said, Wackenhut is one of the largest security companies in the US and perform a lot of security work for DoD.  The company is no longer US owned, having been bought by a Danish company some years back.  If you are a member of a firefighter's union, you might want to see how Wackenhut addresses your union membership while being employed by them.  It probably isn't going to be an issue with your local, but it's a question to be asked.

Wackenhut has about 600 employees in Iraq at this time.  They require that firefighters signing on with them have 4 years experience (some have said this is overlooked if the application is exceptional—this might be true, since I've also heard Wackenhut is getting stricter on certifications, but less strict on time served as an FF).  Also, since DoD only recognizes IFSAC or PROBOARD certifications, you will have to have one of them for Wackenhut to hire you. NFPA / State certifications won't work unless they've changed the rules in the last six months or so.  Again, Wackenhut will be able to tell you what they are currently requiring as far as certifications go.

You should also check with Wackenhut on your time of commitment, OT vs. ST pay, security in place to protect you while over there, method of payments,  medical benefits, injury--death--disablement policy, etc.  I've known several firefighters who made more than 80K a year working for Wackenhut in Iraq--and have heard few notable complaints.  That is not to say things are perfect, but that's about all I know to tell you based upon the broadness of your question.  Hope that helps…
