First Aid - Very tip of finger cut by electric trimmers

Expert: Roger Eib - 11/1/2009

Question
Hi:  I'm writing for my husband who is now resting.  He was trimming shrubs and the blades caught him on the very end of his middle finger.  Of course, it bled a lot and was very painful. His nail is jutting out 1/4". 1)Ran under cold water 5 min for pain and cleansing 2)Poured hydrogen peroxide on it 5-6 times  between water 3)Bleeding began to slow down 4)Washed hands well with soap 5)Used antibacterial cream %26 wrapped in gauze 6)He's resting with hand raised above shoulder %26 ice under hand.  Are we doing all we should? What are changes indicating a problem %26 visit to doctor? Thanks so much.  Judy

Answer
Ron,

The main thing that you need to look for is infection. If his finger or hand should get hot and red, with or without a pus discharge then he will need to be placed on some antibiotics.

                                                 Good Luck
