First Aid - numb index due to deep palm cut

Expert: Stephen Bernhard - 8/12/2007

Question
Last Friday (08/10/07)I cut my hand pretty deep at the bottom of my index (on the palm area). I did go to the ER and had it stiched (8 stiches). My index feels numb still. I can move it in all directions but it is numb. It did feel numb right when i cut my hand as it was bleeding all the way to the ER. I did mention that to the 2 Doctors that looked at it. Now, 2 days later and it's still numb. Your advice is very much appreciated, thank you.

Answer
Hi Seth,

I must admit that the situation which you describe is beyond the scope of the first aid caregiver.  The numbness might be related to trauma to the nerves in your hand.

I am sorry that I am not able elaborate on this, as it is well beyond my area of expertise.

Thanks,
Stephen
