I managed a petshop for five years and I am a petcare specialist for a large petchain now. I love my animals. I love this kind of work. Subject: Fire eel

Question
Hello!  I'm definatley in need of help.  I have a fire eel, it's about 8 inches long and was a very healthy eater up to a couple weeks ago.  It's diet was blood worm mainly cause thats all it would eat.  The problem is a small growth on the side of it's head and since I first noticed it, it hasn't gotten any bigger, it's about the size of a BB and is white in color.  Shortly after I noticed it, the eel stopped burrowing, stopped eating, and wasn't able to swim correctly.  These days it can't swim at all, but more or less has convulsions and stays "bent" in half no matter where it is.  It is starting to loose it's awsome coloration and I have no idea what to do.  the tank is a 75 and I've been treating it with maracyn plus and am going to do a 30% water change today, other than that I'm lost.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Matt,                                                        To tell you the truth he may have cancer.... I don't think it is anything common... they get things like we do..... They are a very hardy fish and by the time you get this he will probably be lost. I wish I could give you more , but I can't. Tina
